In a randomized double-blind placebo study, patients with fibromyalgia received 300 mg of CoQ10 per day for 40 days. The fibromyalgia group that received CoQ10 supplementation had a reduction in FIQ (Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire) with significantly less pain, reduced fatigue (both reduced morning fatigue and reduced general fatigue) compared to those who did not take CoQ10 supplementation.
Those who took supplements also had significantly reduced pain in so-called tender points* and recovered from inflammation.
Furthermore, the researchers noticed that the fibromyalgia group that received supplements of CoQ10 developed new mitochondria in the cells.
The researchers say that ”These results lead to the hypothesis that CoQ10 has potential therapeutic effects in Fibromyalgia and indicate new potential molecular targets for the treatment of this disease.”
Fibromyalgia affects approximately 5 percent of the population. Both functional disorders of mitochondria and lack of CoQ10 have been seen in Fibromyalgia.
